House Democrats seek 6 years of Trump's tax returns

"We're working that out as-I'm always under audit, it seems", the president said.

During the dramatic hearing before the House Oversight Committee, Cohen further questioned the existence of the President's audit.

They also complained that they weren't consulted before the Democrats sent Fairbank a request on March 11 requesting a wide range of materials related to Trump's finances and business holdings.

In another development, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Democratic-led House Intelligence Committee, led by Trump critic Adam Schiff, is seeking an interview with and documents from a top organizer on Trump's inaugural committee. And there's nothing legally stopping him from releasing his taxes even if they're being audited.

Kildee said it's premature to speculate whether the documents could shed any additional light on the president's potential financial entanglement with nefarious interests, but said there's "great public value that comes from the transparency of having the president's tax returns available".

Hedge fund manager Tom Steyer, who is leading a campaign to impeach Trump, has been pressuring Neal to request the president's tax returns. Now he may have no choice but to give them up. That strategy is just as unsurprising as House Democrats' strategy in triggering it.

The committee also authorized Cummings to issue a subpoena for White House Personnel Security Director Carl Kline to testify regarding the committee's probe into the White House security clearance process.

The request dampened the hopes of liberals in the party's grass roots that an impeachment saga could be looming. "This has nothing to do with the Mueller report".

The then-Republican chairman of the committee, Kevin Brady of Texas, rejected Pascrell's requests 18 times by the New Jersey Democrat's count.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to impose tariffs on vehicle imports from Mexico unless it does more to stop illegal migrants and drug trafficking, his latest warning to America's southern neighbour to tighten border security. It's more on Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to make the determination, as the IRS answers to Mnuchin, not Barr.

Trump said he could not provide his tax returns because they were being audited by the Internal Revenue Service.

Chairman Neal's office did not respond to the Caller's request for comment.

Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.) wrote a letter to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig, citing his authority pursuant to 26 U.S. Code § 6103 (f).

It is all but certain that the administration will take steps to challenge the Democratic interpretation of the law on which the request is based. "And now he's completely oblique when it comes to his personal interests".

He added that he does not believe the Treasury Secretary or the IRS has to provide Congress with his tax returns so long as he is under audit, as he now claims to be. President Trump has called them his "red line".

In addition to Trump's personal records, Neal requested information from the President's business entities, including the Bedminster golf course LLC, as well as DJT Holdings LLC, DJT Holdings Managing Member LLC, DTTM Operations LLC, DTTM Operations Managing Member Cor, LFB Acquisition Member Corp and LFB Acquisition LLC.
