The Nebraska Public Power District declared an "unusual event" at its Cooper Nuclear Station power plant on Friday, with the possibility of flooding along the Missouri River.

Nith River (New Hamburg & Ayr): Flood coordinators are advised to monitor conditions and prepare to warn residents in Warning Zone 2 as needed. In Fremont, west of Omaha, the Dodge County Sheriff's Office issued a mandatory evacuation for some residents after floodwaters broke through a levee along the Platte River.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Nebraska is taking over duties from the displaced NWS employees in Omaha while the flood threat remains. In Iowa, a section of northbound Interstate 29 that runs parallel to the Missouri River was closed due to flooding.

Officials in Sarpy County, south of Omaha, said Saturday that power may be shut off to communities along the Missouri, Platte and Elkhorn rivers for safety reasons.

The National Weather Service said the Missouri River at St. Joseph reached almost 26 feet on Saturday, about a foot below what's considered major flooding at the northwest Missouri city.

The North Raccoon River is forecast to rise to flood stage Thursday evening and continue rising to 20.5 feet, or 5.5 feet above flood stage, by Saturday evening.


The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is increasing releases from a dam along the Missouri River in southeastern South Dakota as flooding escalates across the region due to a massive late-winter storm.

If the status is upgraded to a flood warning, they should turn off their gas, water and electricity, move their family, pets and vehicle to safety, and move any precious possessions upstairs.

Lower Michigan also saw severe thunderstorm warnings, watches, flooding, high winds and hail as the storm trekked across the Midwest. The two cities have taken several measures such as home buyouts and levees since then. They could be tested this year. Warming weather and rapid snow melt is in the forecast for the area, but no further rain is in the short range forecast. The chance the river will reach major flood stage in Fargo increased from 50 percent last week to 90 percent.

At least four deaths were linked to the weather system. In central portions of the state, some homes have been evacuated near Otho, where some ice jams have also been reported.
