New caravan of up to 2,000 migrants seeks to cross border into Texas

The march is set to begin near Bowie High School, pass the convention center holding Trump's event and finish at Chalio Acosta Sports Center - a one-mile trip along the US-Mexico border.

Congressional Democrats have not acceded to Trump's demand for $5.7 billion to build a border wall.

As President Donald Trump prepares for his first campaign rally of 2019 in El Paso, Texas, former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke slammed Trump's ongoing use of his hometown as an example of a successful border wall. "Now, with a powerful barrier in place, El Paso is one of our safest cities", Trump told the nation.

In his recent annual State of the Union address that occured on February 5, Trump spoke on the topic of the border, urging the committee to designate the money due to "the lawless state of our southern border", which he went on to describe as "a threat to the safety, security and financial well-being of all Americans".

Trump is expected to draw parallels between the success cities like El Paso and San Diego have seen with a border wall and compare them to cities that now have no border fencing.

Despite the newfound optimism, Trump continues to threaten to declare a national emergency to circumvent Congress if lawmakers fail to reach a deal he can stomach.

"These migrants face many risks", including organized crime, corrupt local police and hostility from local residents, said Alberto Xicotencatl, who runs a shelter in the Coahuila state capital of Saltillo, about 250 miles (400 km) south of Piedras Negras.

The Republican president cited El Paso on Tuesday in his State of the Union address as an example of a city he says became safer after a barrier was installed.

"We are considered the safest city with a population greater than 500,000", Margo said. The Security Secretary for Coahuila, Jose Luis Pliego Corona reportedly wants the United States to know that Mexican officials are doing everything possible to identify and remove any criminal threat in the group. He led the House chamber in singing happy birthday to a Holocaust survivor sitting with first lady Melania Trump.

The violent crime rate in El Paso peaked in 1993 (similar to many other US cities), according to local and federal statistics analyzed by the El Paso Times.

When Trump discussed El Paso's past, he sounded like he was describing Ciudad Juarez across the border in Northern Mexico. "And, El Paso was a safe city long before any wall was built". Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said details on nettlesome border wall issues haven't been worked out. Sen. According to the El Paso Times, this rally is scheduled for 7 p.m.at the El Paso County Coliseum.

El Paso's crime rate fell between 1993 and 2006 by more than 34 percent - but it wasn't because of a wall.
