Porzingis, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2015 National Basketball Association draft, was averaging a career-best 22.7 points per game before he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during a breakout All-Star season in 2017-18. Owner Mark Cuban said the rehab plan from the Knicks organization is not relevant to the Mavericks, who will evaluate Porzingis and develop their own timetable for his return. On Monday, videos circulated of Porzingis getting up some free throws at practice (as part of a grouping with Dirk Nowitzki and Harrison Barnes). Noah only played 53 games in his two seasons with the Knicks and was once suspended 20 games for using performance-enhancing drugs before agreeing to a three-year, $37.8 million buyout.

"I was surprised", Porzingis said of the trade Monday. "I've been patient this whole time, and I'm going to keep staying patient, which is one of the hardest things for me to do. We're going to make the right decisions".

Hardaway, the Knicks' leading scorer who had slumped in the past two months, was traded largely to make room for two max contract slots.

According to ESPN, Porzingis was asked if he wants to play in Dallas for the long haul, Cuban interjected saying "I can answer that for you".

He conceivably could become an unrestricted free agent in July 2020 if he chooses to sign his qualifying offer this summer and decline any extension offers from Dallas.

Mills noted that both parties seemed to be on the same page at the beginning of the season after NY elected not to extend Porzingis' rookie contract, before Porzingis began showing signs of a disconnect.

"We have a great relationship", the 23-year-old Porzingis said of the 19-year-old Doncic. "I hope we have a lot of time to spend together now that I'm in here in Dallas while he's still playing. I think about basketball 24/7, and I really see us being very special on the court and fun to watch, so I'm excited about it".
