Designer Imagines 'Folding iPhone X' in New Concept

OnePlus 5G-enabled device to arrive later this year

Samsung only has a diagonal of 7.3 inches on its foldable smartphone and still has to leave room for that large notch in the top right-hand corner of the display.

This afternoon in the grounds of the lovely Montjuïc Park in Barcelona, Huawei has entered the fold - launching the stunning Mate X 5G foldable phone. He made the Galaxy Fold look like an unfinished prototype in comparison.

There are hardly any details about the camera except that it was developed by Leica. Huawei plans to start shipping its first foldable device sometime in mid-2019 but admitted finding it hard to lower the cost of making the unique phone.

Though comparisons to Samsung's Galaxy Fold are inevitable, the Mate X takes the idea of the foldable phone in a very different direction.

What we do know is that the Mate X has a single 8-inch OLED display that can be folded like a book.

Huawei bills the Mate X as "the world's fastest foldable 5G phone".

- 1,980 United States dollars (£1,518), UK release confirmed for May. The phone comes powered by Huawei's Kirin 980 processor and is backed by a 4500mAh battery.

A cover is also offered for the device in order to protect it from damage. Apple believes this option is a cheaper and easier way to do folds, and will also result in a slimmer form figure.

Thomas Husson, principal analyst at Forrester Research, said the Mate X showed Huawei was an innovative technology company and no longer trailing American and Korean competitors.

Washington considers the matter urgent as countries around the world prepare to roll out fifth-generation or 5G networks that will bring near-instantaneous connectivity, vast data capacity and futuristic technologies such as self-driving cars. Moreover, both the displays of the device can be used simultaneously when it's in its smartphone mode. "I's better for productivity over 16:9, better for performing, better for reading documentation", said Yu.

Huawei has grown by looking beyond China and other Asian markets. This allows a 1GB file to be transferred in three seconds.

Using Intel's 5G mobile trial platform and Ericsson's software, the two have proved they can run 4G and 5G traffic simultaneously on the same frequency carrier.
