The film won best drama and lead Rami Malek won actor in a drama for his portrayal of the rock legend.

Singer has the directing credit for the film, despite being sacked by Fox during production for alleged absences on set, but he's always been the subject of multiple sexual assault allegations.

The 37-year-old, LA-born actor also paid tribute to the other members of Queen, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, who he sat with for the ceremony.

Just a few hours before, the actor Rami Malek won the Golden Globe for best actor for his performance as the late Queen singer, Freddie Mercury, while the film picked up the Best Picture award. The Mexican movie, which also took the prize for best director, is seen as an Oscar frontrunner in February.

It was more or less assumed that A Star is Born was going to win everything at this year's Golden Globes.

Speaking to the crowd, Malek said, "My heart is pounding out of my chest right now". When asked if it was fun for the duo, Malek said, "I don't know that it was". "So I thought I could easily go up and say hi".

Civil rights dramedy "Green Book" was the numerical victor - if not the prestige player - picking up awards for best comedy movie, best supporting actor Mahershala Ali and best screenplay.

Along with the film's expansion to 1,300 theaters in the USA and Canada on January 11, 2019, this is 20th Century Fox's biggest domestic push for Bohemian Rhapsody, which exceeded box office expectations in the States but is nowhere near the global frenzy for the film.

In television, the big winners were Cold War spy thriller "The Americans", limited series "The Assassination of Gianni Versace", and new Netflix comedy "The Kominsky Method".
