Washington to pay respects, bid farewell to George H.W. Bush

The United States Postal Service will suspend regular mail deliveries, retail services and administrative office activity. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will also be closed.

Later Monday night, President Trump and the first lady paid their respects to Bush at the Capitol Rotunda.

George H.W. Bush's journey to his final resting place will be aboard a train whose engine was specifically built to honor his life.

Mayor Sylvester Turner is hosting Monday evening's event featuring music and community leaders in front of City Hall.

Shortly before leaving the service, he married his 19-year-old sweetheart, Barbara Pierce, and forged the longest presidential marriage in USA history. Bush will lie in state in the Capitol starting Monday and a service will be held at the Washington National Cathedral later in the week.

On Wednesday morning, a motorcade will take the remains to a state funeral at the National Cathedral. His death also reduces membership in the ex-presidents' club to four: Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. His arrival at Ellington Field is expected at 4:30 p.m.

He said Bush's "quality of life had deteriorated a lot" in recent months, but that near the end he was able to talk by phone with his adult children, including former President George W. Bush.

Sully will now work as a service dog assisting with therapy for wounded soldiers. He will be interred at the family plot at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station. Alan Simpson, who became a close friend to Bush, and presidential historian Jon Meacham, the late president's biographer.

Bush died at his Houston home on Friday at age 94. The current president gave Bush, a decorated WWII naval aviator who flew several combat missions, a brief salute before the first couple left the Capitol. Despite the fact that Trump's rise to power included lambasting past presidents, including both Bushes, the President has responded to Bush's death with repeated laudatory comments.
