Woman Who Lived in Kenyan Refugee Camp Wins USA Elections

Rashida Tlaib of Michigan becomes one of first Muslim women in Congress

First Muslim woman elected to House of Representatives

The midterm election, she said, proved "clearly... that there is a rejection of politics of fear and divisiveness, that this is a country that really welcomes people and treats them like family, and don't only just welcome refugees and immigrants, we send them to Washington".

This is the first time that Muslim women have been elected to the House.

Shaath cabled Tlaib congratulating here for her victory and for being the first Palestinian-American to become a Congresswoman. Omar has extensive experience and she served on numerous non-profit boards.

A pair of districts in the Midwest will add Muslim women to the ranks of the US Congress for the first time, CNN has projected.

The two women made history as incoming election results showed that the pair had been chosen to represent Michigan's 13th district and Minnesota's 5th district respectively. They are the first Muslim women elected to Congress.

Omar won against Republican candidate Jennifer Zielinski, replacing Rep. Keith Ellison.

There was no Republican on the ballot in the overwhelmingly Democratic district. The news site said she was criticized by some Palestinian activists for being too engaged with pro-Israel lobbyists, and from some left-leaning Jewish activists who criticized her call for a one-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

- Vox (@voxdotcom) November 7, 2018Congratulations to Ilhan Omar, the first Somali-American elected to U.S. House.

In an interview with Elle magazine in September this year, Ms Omar opened up about her Somalia background and shared what it was like to arrive in the United States for the first time as a child of 10.

Haaland, a member of the Pueblo of Laguna tribe, is a well-known community activist in her solidly Democratic district, working tirelessly to encourage Native Americans - who make up two per cent of the United States population - to vote.

Democrats are expected to take some heat for this win. The midterms were a heated period in American politics that were seen as a referendum on Trump, which was one reason why many minorities and women of color made a decision to run for office. Omar, a refugee from Somalia, is the first Somali-American Muslim woman to hold public office. The first woman to wear a hijab.

Tlaib is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants and became the first Muslim female member of Michigan's state legislature a decade ago.
