UCF Knights Hit Top 10 in College Football Playoff Rankings

The top eight teams in the rankings were unchanged.

After that win, the Knights moved up three spots in the AP Top 25 poll to No. 8. So does the point spread, which is often inflated towards the stronger teams at this time of year and those teams with more to play for. But with no hope at a playoff, it's a bit of an empty achievement.

In the spirit of making lemonade from the boring lemons we've been handed these last few week (in the CFP rankings department, of course; there's been plenty of fun elsewhere), let's see what each real playoff contender must do to reach the final four if the universe acts in a relatively normal way, i.e. most of the favorites win. Washington State's loss came at LSU and the Cougars played an easier non-conference schedule than the Tigers did.

For three straight weeks, we have stared at the same top four: No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Clemson, No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 4 MI. But what if Texas beats Oklahoma and Northwestern beats Ohio State? ACC Coastal champion Pitt makes an appearance in the rankings at No. 24 after clinching the division on Saturday. "We understand Ohio State has a quality road win over Penn State".

On Dec. 1 the Knights will host the American Athletic Conference Championship game at home, playing either Memphis or Houston. Notre Dame 4. MI 5. The main debate, if the top five teams win out, will be Ohio State vs. Oklahoma. In the bigger picture, though, the No. 10 Buckeyes thoroughly embarrassed MI, setting the stage for the fourth spot to boil down to a hard decision on Selection Day if both Ohio State and Oklahoma win their conference titles. LSU remained seventh, Washington State held at 8 and Ohio State stayed at 10th, getting jumped by UCF. West Virginia 14. Texas 15.
