"On a historic evening, voters in Minnesota's Fifth Congressional District have elected Ilhan Omar to be the first Somali American elected to U.S. Congress. Ilhan's victory is not just a victory for Minnesota, but it's also a symbol of Minnesota's love and embrace of our immigrant communities".
She could be joined by 36-year-old Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, a Muslim woman who is expected to also win her race on Tuesday night.
"I ran because of injustices and because of my boys, who are questioning their (Muslim) identity and whether they belong", Tlaib said in an USA television interview in August. Congressman Andre Carson, who is Muslim and African American, won re-election in his safely-Democratic district in the state of Indiana.
Tlaib, Omar join other women of colour who won big on Tuesday night; Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez became the youngest woman elected to Congress, and Ayanna Pressley became the first black congresswoman in MA.
She spent four years in a refugee camp before coming to the United States at age 12.
"The first woman of color to represent our state in Congress, the first woman to wear a hijab, the first refugee ever elected to Congress and one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress". He resigned his position to run to be Minnesota's attorney general.
In 2008, she became the first Muslim woman to serve in the MI state legislature.
Like Omar, Tlaib championed progressive policies, including a Medicare for All, a $15 minimum wage and immigration reform.
"We changed the course of history at a time we thought it was impossible".
Ocasio-Cortez easily won election in her district which spans parts of the NY boroughs of Queens and the Bronx. She has a bachelor's degree in politics from North Dakota State University and has also studied public affairs. Following her win in 2016, Omar said her political involvement had become more than "about me or the win or the loss".
