Nittany Lions At No. 14 In First CFB Playoff Rankings

The First 2019 College Football Playoff Poll Is Out And You’ll Never Guess Who’s No. 1! (It’s Alabama)

Michigan Checks In At No. 5 In Initial College Football Playoff Rankings

Defending national champion Alabama was ranked No. 1, and Clemson, LSU and Notre Dame rounded out the top four.

Not to mention they would still need to have Notre Dame lose at least once as well. Ahead of their marquee matchup against Alabama on Saturday, they've played five teams that were ranked at the time and beat four of them: No. 8 Miami, No. 7 Auburn, No. 2 Georgia and No. 22 Mississippi State. SEC West foe LSU sits at No. 3. What teams do you think were left off and do you agree with the top four teams?

In the first four years of the CFP, the committee has never had the same four teams in its first rankings and its final ones.

The Tigers (7-1) landed at No. 3 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings released on ESPN on Tuesday evening. I know it's only a few spot jump, but a few spots can make a huge difference when it comes to bowl selections, and it goes along ways in showing how the committee feels about Kirk's team.

"When you look at a team's resume, you look at every piece of it", Mullens said. That's right the Tigers are No. 3, followed by the Irish in fourth and the Wolverines in fifth.

The rest of the top 10 includes No. 5 MI, followed by Georgia, Oklahoma, Washington State, Kentucky and Ohio State.

There weren't any major surprises Tuesday night when the College Football Playoff selection committee revealed its first set of rankings.

Alabama has yet to hit a speed bump this season (scored 50-plus points in all but two games) and has a firm hold on the first spot.

Start with the blockbuster showdown Saturday between 'Bama and LSU in Baton Rouge. MI and Ohio State will face off in their big game, the loser of that game is likely out. No team ranked third in the first CFP rankings has ever made the playoff.

Some college football fans may remember the 2007 season, which was fantastic from a perspective of playing hot potato with the highest rankings in the country.

They are a 40/1 pick to win the national championship, mostly because sportsbooks believe LSU won't defeat Alabama, and thus fall out of the CFP race. Four teams, and only one Power-5 conference in the playoff.

But Michigan can do the same in the final week of the regular season by beating Ohio State.

"You have to recognize with six new voices around the table, six new minds on how they view the rankings and evaluate the teams, it's different", said Hocutt, who was replaced as the Big 12 representative by Castiglione.
