One person has been stabbed to death on a central Melbourne street where a knife-wielding man was left in a critical condition after being shot by police.
A civilian can be seen pushing his shopping trolley at the attacker, which only momentarily stops the suspect from lashing his arm toward two police officers.
The incident began with police getting reports of a auto that had burst into flames on the Bourke Street in Melbourne.
Local media showed video footage of a man in a dark tunic slashing and stabbing wildly at two police officers as the vehicle burned, before being shot with a weapon.
Victoria Police Superintendent David Clayton confirmed the suspect had stabbed three people before lunging at police.
He has been taken to hospital in a critical condition. The condition of the surviving pair is unknown. "It's very early in the stages of the investigation", Supt Clayton said.
The exact circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage.
The incident comes two days after the trial for Melbourne man James Gargasoulas, who has pleaded not guilty to 33 charges including six counts of murder for a deadly incident on 20 January, 2017, when he allegedly drove a vehicle through pedestrians along Bourke Street mall and killed six people.
The Victoria Police took to Twitter to update on the situation.
