Hamilton storms to Abu Dhabi pole with lap record

McLaren to sport farewell livery for Alonso

The Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix 2018 events run from November 22 to 25. "I have no doubt we have the right people in place to take a step forward in 2019".

Lewis Hamilton marched to the championship with two rounds to spare after a fantastic second half of the season.

The race will be the last with Red Bull for Ricciardo, who is joining Renault next year.

The two-time world champion will start what will possibly be his final F1 race this weekend in Abu Dhabi, and now has the remainder of the 2018/19 World Endurance Championship and a second attempt at the Indianapolis 500 in his plans for next year.

Renault's Nico Hulkenberg emerged unhurt from a frightening-looking accident in which he was pitched into a roll and landed upside down in a first-lap clash with Romain Grosjean's Haas. Hulkenberg was later released, with doctors confident he had escaped the collision unharmed.

"We certainly wouldn't hesitate, if we needed a driver that's not one of our current two, to have Fernando be the first on the speed-dial list", he said. I'm also pleased that my relationship with McLaren will continue with the Indy 500, and there will be more new challenges together.

The trackside marshals were quickly on hand to extinguish the flames.

"I don't think he's used the clutch pedal on a race auto for quite some time", he said, with Formula One cars having only a brake and throttle with paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.

He told Sky Sports: "I'd imagine it's going to be Sebastian and Valtteri alongside me but Red Bull they've got a great auto, they've been very strong at the end of the year". Ricciardo was next, Bottas third, and Hamilton fourth about one second behind.

The race starts in the late afternoon and ends in the evening, which affects the usual evolution of track temperature during the Grand Prix, while the anti-clockwise circuit is all about traction and braking rather than lateral force.

"He's such a big character, we will miss him and we wish him the very best for the future", Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said.

"I have had a strong end to the season, performing well in the last few races, even when the vehicle wasn't quick enough to score big points", he said.

Urged by his team to chase the one point up for grabs for 10th, Alonso replied: "I have 1,800 points".
