Pompeo and Kim also discussed "denuclearisation steps that will be taken by North Korea and the issue of attendance by the USA government", as well as "corresponding measures" to be taken by the United States, the statement said.

Meeting at the Diaoyutai Guest House, Wang told Pompeo that the United States has "stepped up rhetoric over trade tensions" after a raft of tit-for-tat tariffs on billion of dollars in USA and Chinese goods.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is expected to visit Russian Federation soon, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Monday (Oct 8).

He met with Kim in Pyongyang and South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Seoul, both on Sunday.

Mr Pompeo said "significant progress" had been made towards denuclearisation.

Wang appealed to Pompeo to cease actions that Beijing sees as threatening its interests in order to avoid disrupting cooperation over North Korea and other issues.

Pompeo also met with Politburo member Yang Jiechi.

Wang said the North Korean issue shows that Beijing and Washington "can and should increase communication and cooperation".

"We believe this has been a direct attack on our mutual trust, and has cast a shadow on China-U.S. relations", Wang said.

The top U.S. diplomat also said both sides were "pretty close" to agreement on the details of a second summit, which Kim proposed to U.S. President Donald Trump in a letter last month.

"It's a long process", Pompeo told reporters.

Pompeo has repeatedly refused to discuss details of negotiations, including a USA position on North Korea's demand for a declared end to the Korean War and a proposal from Seoul for such a declaration to be accompanied by a shutdown of the North's main known nuclear facility.

"As President Trump said, there are many steps along the way and we took one of them today", Pompeo told Moon in Seoul, in remarks that offered only a broad assessment of his talks with Kim. "We will be having more frequent and higher level working level group discussions than we have had in some time".
