Twenty people have been killed in a horror road crash in upstate NY after a limo collided with pedestrians.
A horrendous crash involving a stretch limousine that was in a collision with another vehicle and also hit pedestrians near an upstate NY tourist spot has killed 20 people, authorities said on Sunday.
These kinds of altered vehicles have anxious officials, said Peter Goelz, former managing director of the National Transportation Safety Board.
It is unclear how numerous fatalities were people inside the limo or standing outside the restaurant, a popular tourist spot during fall foliage season.
"I don't know what to tell you, they were the best nieces that anybody could have", she said.
"They did the responsible thing getting a limo so they wouldn't have to drive anywhere", said their aunt, Barbara Douglas.
All 18 people in the limo and two pedestrians died in the deadliest road accident in the United States in nearly a decade, officials said.
"There were witnesses on the scene, but just from the evidence discovered at the crash, it was apparent that this was the direction of travel and what happened", Fiore said.
An ambulance is parked outside the Apple Barrel Country Store and Cafe on Saturday following the deadly crash in upstate NY.
New York State Police are investigating the accident, as is the National Transportation Safety Board.
"Throughout the next few days, NTSB investigators will work on scene to thoroughly document the scene and to gather what we call the perishable evidence", NTSB chairman Robert Sumwalt said.
The deadly crash happened Saturday afternoon in Schoharie, which is about 40 miles from Albany, and led to several people killed, according to the New York State Police. Authorities didn't say whether the limo occupants were wearing seatbelts or provide the speed of the limo at the time of the accident on Saturday afternoon.
Authorities on Sunday didn't release names of victims or other specifics, but state police set up a hotline for family members. Autopsies were being conducted. She said her own daughter had been invited along but couldn't go.
The couple were married at a "beautiful wedding" in June at a venue in upstate New York, Ms Abeling said.
"When we went to pick up the dog, all the people that they were with had all their cars parked in front of their house", Mr. Andrews said.
Vertucci, who grew up in Amsterdam, New York, was an administrative assistant at St. Mary's Healthcare in Amsterdam, Abeling said. Semprivivo said that one of the other passengers who was killed, Patrick Cushing, was Erin's McGowan's's cousin.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, the Apple Barrel Country Store thanked emergency responders for their actions in the aftermath of the "horrific" accident.
Valerie Abeling, the aunt of victim Erin McGowan, who died along with her new husband, Shane McGowan, said Erin sent her daughter a message complaining about the state of the vehicle just 20 minutes before the crash.
