Hurricane Florence strengthens as it nears United States mainland

Regardless of where the storm makes landfall, Florence is expected to bring a tremendous storm surge that could be life threatening. The office warned of water ponding on Battleship Road near the U.S.S.

Officials in North Carolina have already issued mandatory evacuation orders for coastal Dare County and Hatteras Island.

The National Hurricane Center's next update on Hurricane Florence is scheduled for 11 p.m. It is expected to strengthen and possibly become a Category 5 storm Tuesday before closing in on North or SC on Thursday.

NASA is using its various high-flying tools to monitor the storm, taking precipitations measurements and NOAA's National Hurricane Center is using that data to forecast the storm's progress. "We don't want to risk one SC life".

Florence is expected to strengthen further.

Ships undergoing maintenance and unable to leave port can add storm lines, drop anchor and disconnect power lines, according to the Navy.

The governor warned residents that Florence was gaining strength and that the winds would likely be higher than other recent hurricanes.

A rip current statement is in effect for all beaches in Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties. The hurricane is registering maximum sustained winds near 130 miles per hour. It is moving west at 14 miles per hour. But the track still places the storm over central North Carolina Friday as a weak category 1 hurricane or a strong tropical storm.

Packing winds of up to 220 km/h (140 mph) late Monday, Florence was expected to further strengthen and become "an extremely unsafe major hurricane" by the time in makes landfall in the Carolinas on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in a 21:00 UTC update.

As of 5 a.m. EDT, Florence was centered about 625 miles (1,005 kilometers) southeast of Bermuda, moving west at 9 mph (15 kph). Most forecast models are trending towards southeastern N.C. near the Wilmington area.

An average hurricane season includes at least 12 named storms - which may be less powerful than full-fledged hurricanes - and six hurricanes, with three of those being major storms.

Amtrak said Monday it is canceling service to points south of Washington starting Wednesday and through the weekend.

"Everyone in Virginia needs to prepare", Gov. Northam said.

By 5 pm, the storm's winds had again increased to 140 miles per hour, with even stronger gusts.

Hurricane Florence may become a category 4 storm.

Up and down the densely populated coast, residents have been told to prepare, and not just for a possible direct blow.

For our region, an area of high pressure is expected to suppress Florence, keeping it from heading our way.

Inland residents should be prepared with enough supplies such as water, batteries, flashlights, and non-perishable food in the event power outages last for up to a week.

The warning was issued by the UAE Embassy on its Twitter account.

The US military said it was sending an advance team to Raleigh, North Carolina, to coordinate with federal and state partners. As the storm approaches, President Donald Trump on Monday approved a state of emergency for North Carolina.

Duke has not yet announced undergraduate class cancellations.
