On the same day his former starting quarterback officially chose to start over at somewhere other than Clemson, Dabo Swinney has addressed a decision that many saw coming over the past couple 72 hours or so.
"I feel like it's what's best for me and my future", Bryant told Manie Robinson of The Greenville News.
In the end, I think most former Clemson football players have a grasp and understanding on the situation and will continue to both support Kelly Bryant and the Tigers going forward, as we all should.
For Bryant, his transfer comes at the ideal time as he already appeared in four games this season. He's one of the best young people I've ever been around. Bryant started every game last season and the first four this year, guiding the Tigers to a 16-2 record. I understand the loyalty factor and everything else that goes into play, but why is there a sense of entitlement as in Kelly Bryant earned the right to a lifetime contract to be the starting quarterback at Clemson?
Lawrence's first start will be Saturday at home against Syracuse.
"'I'm not discrediting Trevor", he told Robinson.
With the dual-threat quarterback ready to transfer from Clemson, one lucky program will gain a battle-tested leader for next season.
"If I was anxious about that or was deceitful in some way, I could've huddled up our coaches and said let's make sure we start him against Syracuse, that way he's got no option, but that's not how I operate", Swinney said. "I love him and care about him (and) wish him nothing but the best". I've done everything y'all have asked me to do, plus more'. I've never been in trouble with anything.
Bryant's demotion did not sit well with the graduate student, who led Clemson to a 12-2 mark a year ago, a third consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference championship and College Football Playoff berth.
Swinney was asked about the controversial "slap in the face" comments by Bryant.
Lawrence (above) - a 6-foot-6, 215-pound native of Cartersville, Georgia - has completed 39 of 60 passes for 600 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions through four games.
As for the Tigers, hearing about Kelly's decision to transfer was quite upsetting. Now, he will be able to move on to another FBS program as a graduate transfer and play in 2019.
