20th Century Fox unveiled the very first trailer for Dark Phoenix last night, offering us our first look at the 90s-set X-Men sequel, and there was a lot to unpack. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Sophie Turner and Tye Sheridan return in an ensemble cast.
We also get a glimpse of Jessica Chastain as villain Smith in the clip - which you can see above. It is a direct sequel to 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse and revolves around Sophie Turner's Jean Grey being possessed by an all-powerful evil entity, the titular Dark Phoenix.
Simon Kinberg has produced several X-Men films, but this time, he's helming the movie. Dark Phoenix should serve as the final full X-Men movie for Fox before Disney take over the franchise next year.
In the movie, Jean Grey (Turner) is almost killed after being hit by a cosmic force. Previously, no X-Men have ever appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe due to rights restrictions between the two studios (though you could make a point that Avengers Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch came from the mutant world). Ironically, given his alliance in Dark Phoenix, he was almost killed by Selene in the comics. Now Jean is free to help rebuild the X-Men school, while honing her powers under the tutelage of Xavier, Beast, and Mystique. Others say a well-done Dark Phoenix movie is way overdue given the last time Dark Phoenix was in an X-Men movie, the highly-regrettable X-Men: The Last Stand by director Brett Ratner. "Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite - not only to save Jean's soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy".
"So #XMenDarkPhoenix trailer. It doesn't look bad". Dark Phoenix was slated to touch down this Fall, but massive reshoots to the third act pushed it back to February.
