The India captain blew his opposite number a kiss, put his finger to his mouth, appeared to summon some choice words - and also reminded Root of his own "mic-drop" gesture after his second successive century had clinched the one-day worldwide series for England.

It was built up as the big battle pre-series, Anderson v Kohli, and while the latter may have got the upper hand after that moment of fortune, you couldn't say Anderson has bowled anything other than superbly, justly rewarded with a couple of lower-order wickets later in the day.

England will hope Jos Buttler will be able to bat on Friday after he went to the hospital during the lunch interval for an X-ray on his left middle finger, which he injured while fielding. Sam Curran stays unbeaten for 67-ball 24* with James Anderson at the opposite end. He'd averaged under 14 the last time India toured England for a Test series.

England only managed to add two runs to their overnight total on Thursday following their dramatic collapse in Wednesday's final session.

The session got even better for India as Ashwin bowled Alastair Cook for a duck, to leave the tourists on nine for one.

Twitter reactions:Twitterati is enjoying their time as the pivotal series between England and India came up with the twists from the beginning.

England had prefaced their evening woe with an earlier stumble which left them three for 112, before Root and Bairstow joined forces in the early afternoon.

England, who were 216 for four when Root was dismissed, lost their next four wickets for 27 runs, with spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who ended the day with four wickets, inflicting the bulk of the damage for the visitors.

They had therefore made a promising start to this first of five Specsavers Tests in six weeks. From a position of security, however, the India unraveled in a hurry with Curran, in his just his second Test match, taking three wickets in one spell.

His exuberant celebration showed how much it meant to him to finally get a score of note on British shores.

His experience in the County Championship has helped Ravinchandran Ashwin vary his pace and simplify his bowling action for English pitches, the off-spinner said after his 4/60 on the first day of the Edgbaston Test.
