The next season of the crime drama stars Mahershala Ali in the lead role as Detective Wayne Hays, as well as Scoot McNairy, Stephen Dorff and Mamie Gummer, and takes place across the Ozark Mountains in three different time period. "There wasn't a fear for me".

Carmen Ejogo, Scoot McNairy, Mamie Gummer and Stephen Dorff co-star in the series, which will premiere nearly three and a half years after the second season closed out. Things I've seen, things I know, wouldn't do anything but cause harm. My whole brain's a bunch of missing pieces. "I want to know the whole story".

It's hard to make much of what we're seeing in this first look, which debuted ahead of the Sharp Objects season finale. Like Hays, West's career has also been influenced by the mysterious crime, and the two will stop at nothing to solve it. Carmen Ejogo (Selma) and Ray Fisher (Justice League) will also star as Amelia Reardon, a schoolteacher, and Wayne's son Henry.

After its groundbreaking freshman season, which starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Louisiana State Police homicide detectives who followed a serial killer for 17 years, True Detective had a lot to prove with its second turn.

No premiere date has yet been set, but True Detective will return to HBO for its third season sometime in January 2019.

HBO president Casey Bloys said at the Television Critics Association press tour earlier this month that "True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto wrote four scripts ahead of filming and the network felt confident about the show's return to form.
