The Oscars are adding a new category to honor popular films and promising a brisk 3-hour ceremony on a much earlier air date of February 9, 2020.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences re-elected John Bailey as president for a second term on Tuesday, a few months after a sexual harassment allegation leveled against him was investigated and dismissed by the organization.
The Atlantic's David Sims dubbed the new bracket "The Black Panther Memorial Award for Movie That We're Afraid Won't Get a Best Picture Nomination", while Vulture's Mark Harris deemed it a "special fake Oscar" for the first superhero film with a primarily black cast. Some will be presented during commercial breaks at the Dolby Theatre, with the key moments being edited into the broadcast later.
The 2019 ceremony will air February 24, while the 2020 ceremony will move to February 9. "The new category will be introduced this coming year, at the 91st Oscars".
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced some of the biggest changes to the Oscars in its almost century-long history. It also clocked it at almost 4 hours, making it the longest show in over a decade.
- Andy Gaudion (@AndyGaudion93) August 8, 2018Add A Best Stunt Category! 91st Oscars telecast is now scheduled for Sunday, February 24, 2019.
Earlier airdate of February 9th, 2020. Even with this change it still can do that of course, but adding a new category just widens the net.
Best Achievement In Popular Film.
In order to fit all the awards into the new 3-hour timeslot, certain awards will be presented during commercial breaks. However, a Best Picture win for a blockbuster is not unheard of. This decision will likely affect the timing of other awards, and the announcement of that year's Oscar nominees - no Hollywood agent is going to happily agree to cutting the time allotted for Oscar campaigns two weeks shorter. Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film?
