Tez is rebranded to Google Pay as Google unifies its payment services

Aside from Hindi and English, the tech giant has plans of introducing eight new languages to Google Search and Google Assistant starting with Marathi.

According to Rajan Anandan, Vice President, India and Southeast Asia, Google India, his firm is creating more locally relevant experiences for Indians and to bring them online. Using natural language processing and speech synthesis AI, this technology can read billions of web pages in 28 languages. Project Navlekha is Google's initiative to empower publications that publish in local languages. "Search, to be truly helpful, it should bring you useful content in all the languages you understand", Shashidhar Thakur, VP, engineering, Google Search said. It supports 28 languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, Marathi and Tamil, even on 2G connections.

Voice, Video, and Vernacular After having rolled out Google Assistant on smart feature phone JioPhone, Google is now leveraging its voice capacities on Google Go, a lite version of its main application. Also, though Google Tez now has a new name, its features remain just the same.

Google has rebranded its payment app Google Tez to Google Pay to tap into the growing Indian digital payment space.

Berkshire Hathaway (BRKA), the company led by renowned investor Warren Buffett, is set to invest up to $360 million in the Indian payments platform, a source told CNNMoney earlier this week.

Google Pay, née Tez now has 22 million active users, with 750 million transactions being made so far since the service launched in September of 2017. People who are approved for the loans will see the money deposited directly into their bank account associated with Google Pay. With the lack of NFC-based mobile payment solutions in the country, Google opted not to launch Google Pay (formerly known as Android Pay) in India, and instead launched a UP-based mobile payment system which is different from NFC-based payment systems.

The re-brand of Tez to Google Pay will complete in the next two weeks.

To provide Internet and Wi-Fi to about 10 million people in over 12,000 villages, Google has tied up with Andhra Pradesh State FiberNet Ltd (APSFNL).

The Google Go app will also get the Google Feed soon. The company is also carrying out a pilot project in Delhi and Bengaluru that involves helping merchants find customers through Google Maps and its Search products. The company has partnered with local Andhra Pradesh State FiberNet Limited to reach nearly 10 million people.
