A loose but emerging coalition of politicians, activists and pro-immigrant protesters has deployed posters and slogans in its calls for the dismantling of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, which critics say has treated some would-be immigrants cruelly and unfairly.

"To the great and fearless men and women of ICE, do not worry or lose your spirit", Trump wrote in one tweet.

Across the nation, ICE has never seemed more visible as anger continues over the separation of families under the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" policy.

"To the great and fearless men and women of ICE, do not worry or lose your spirit", added the president.

This week, Democratic Kirsten Gillibrand of NY became the first senator to announce support for the abolishment of ICE.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic socialist candidate who achieved a shocking win Tuesday over Rep. Joe Crowley in the New York Democratic primary, made the abolition of ICE a key platform in her campaign.

Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) even vowed to introduce a bill to Congress that would abolish ICE. "They can't collect and gather information to go after people who are truly problems".

ICE, a division of the Department of Health and Human Services, has been controversial since "sanctuary cities" have been uncooperative in arresting illegal immigrants and aiding federal agents in removal proceedings. The debate over the agency's future follows the widespread outcry in recent weeks after the Trump administration separated more than 2,000 migrant children from their parents. CBS has identified the men as agents from the Department of Homeland Security inspector general's office. He added: "get rid of ICE you're going to have a country that you're going to be afraid to walk out of your house".

The president's approach to immigration has come under renewed scrutiny since the revelation that the administration's "zero-tolerance" policy involved the separation of families at the U.S. -Mexico border.

Right-wing activists with the group Patriot Prayer also have a permit to march later in the day Saturday and the Portland Police Bureau said Friday they planned to have a heavy police presence.

During my trip to the southern border, it was clear that ICE, and its actions of hunting down and tearing apart families, has wreaked havoc on far too many people.

An ICE spokesman could not be reached for comment on this story, but during a stop in North Dakota this week, Trump warned that if ICE were eliminated, the country would be "overrun with the worst criminal elements you have ever seen". So fearless! The radical left Dems want you out.

'To the great and courageous men and women of ICE, do not worry or lose your spirit. "They are great!" he tweeted.

As a result, children were separated from their families and held first in "processing centers", then in shelters.

Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of MA, have stopped short of calling for ICE to be terminated outright and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus has circulated talking points advising caution - arguing in a memo obtained by CNN that "abolishing ICE without changing President Trump's disastrous immigration policy will not solve the problem".
