Amazon's Prime Day didn't have the greatest start, and it looks like users in NY and Philadelphia were still experiencing some glitches Tuesday morning. In addition to boosting sales, the annual event also gives Amazon the opportunity to lure new Prime members and promote its own products. If your Prime Day funds are running low, there are still some great deals you can grab for $10 or less.
Amazon launched Prime Day in 2015 and by 2017 it was its second biggest shopping day, topped only by Cyber Monday.
Megan Quinn, general partner at Spark Capital, tweeted that Amazon's cloud competitors at Google should be delighted: "Diane Greene is the only person celebrating Amazon Prime Day so far", referring to Google's cloud chief. It's rather impressive to see Amazon maintain stock on such a wide variety of items for almost the entire duration of the huge shopping event.
"The message is clear - while the online giant gets rich, it is saving money on the health of its workers", Stefanie Nutzenberger, a spokesman for the union representing the workers, said in a statement.
Amazon.com Inc. kicked off its big Prime Day sales promotion with technical glitches on its website and app, threatening its 36-hour sales extravaganza. Analysts, meanwhile, saw other things Amazon (AMZN) could have done better, like discounting more fashion brands and taking more advantage of its acquisition of Whole Foods.
The global company that sells everything (except decaf Nescafe Azera - sort it out, lads) started giving intermittent 404 messages at the start of the USA sale saying "something went wrong at our end". Last November, for example, hundreds of Amazon workers in Italy and Germany went on strike, saying they were under "high pressure to create more and more in less time".
Shoppers found an outlet in venting on social media.
Prime Day also usually helps boost the number of Prime memberships. Net sales have grown by at least 20 percent past year to US$17 billion, accounting for about 9.5 percent of the total, per the company's annual report.
"We have been humbled by the response from Prime members to Prime Day in Australia, with demand exceeding our expectations, and sales surpassing Boxing Day on the first day", says Amazon Australia Country Manager Rocco Braeuniger.
