ARSENALArsenal fans are not impressed with Unai Emery's training methods

With Per Mertesacker retiring at the end of last season, the captain's armband is up for grabs at Arsenal, but new manager Unai Emery seems unsure of who will be the towering German's successor.

The former PSG boss - who took over from former long-serving manager Arsene Wenger in May after fevered speculation - insisted his has the squad to compete at the top of English football.

The midfielder has entered the last of his contract and is yet to agree to an extension with the club.

"Normally we are thinking about the young player, the possibility to stay with us or go on loan to another team". At the moment, I think the squad is complete.

"To sign [a player] in the next month?"

They face a tough Premier League opener against champions Manchester City on August 12 with Emery, who left French title holders Paris St Germain at the end of last season, trying to build a team that can compete for a top-four finish.

The Gabon worldwide was among a clutch of regular first team players who returned to the north London's Colney base last week having not been involved at the World Cup and has been put through his paces by Arsene Wenger's successor.

But Arsenal won the race for Torreira and the player's agent has lifted the lid on the scrap the Gunners emerged successful from. "It's clear that we have [a lot] of goalkeepers but we want to work in the future with three goalkeepers in the first team".

And Emery believes that, while he would be happy to head into the Premier League season with his current group of players, they will be in a prime position to strike if a transfer "opportunity" comes up.

Emery says the team is done doing transfer business now, but obviously a can happen between now and deadline day.

"I know this player is very important for the supporters, he grew up here with Arsenal".
